Remembering Kurt Cobain: 30 Years Gone // NIRVANA (VIDEO)

Today (April 5, 2024) is the 30th anniversary of the death of Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. Nirvana was/is a hugely important band to me. I was living in Seattle when he died. The music of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana still resonates very strongly with me. I am truly shocked it has been 30 years.

Being an old guy, I was able to see Nirvana perform live. I also met Kurt very briefly at a record store when we were both buying the same album.

I just wanted to come on and share some quick thoughts on Kurt and Nirvana. Rest In Peace.

Back In The Day: Backstage Stories from the 80s and 90s (VIDEO)

In this week's video I am joined by Maria Buszek. In addition to being an old friend of mine, Maria is also a professor, an author, a record collector, and music fan. We discuss some of the bands we met back in the late 80s/early 90s and the (sometimes) extreme lengths we went to meet them. You'll love this video.

The Dark Stuff Podcast 106: St. Vincent

The Dark Stuff Podcast #106 features an interview with Annie Clark aka St. Vincent. St. Vincent appeared recently in Omaha on her current Digital Witness Tour. Before the show, I sat down with Annie to discuss the state of St. Vincent.

We discussed a number of things including her recent change in record label, the current state of the music business, whether or not it's okay to be a "rock star," her collaboration with David Byrne of Talking Heads, her "emotional" meeting with Eddie Vedder, and that if she could be any other person on earth, it would be Pat Smear (Nirvana, The Germs).

Annie Clark became St. Vincent in 2007 with the release of her debut LP, Marry Me. Since then, she has released four other albums and toured around the world repeatedly. With the release of her newest, self-titled album, St. Vincent is positioned to conquer the mainstream. She recently performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony fronting Nirvana, and she just appeared as the musical guest on the season finale of Saturday Night Live.

The Dark Stuff Podcast 101: Overwhelming Colorfast

The Dark Stuff #101 is dedicated to the short-lived Bay Area rock band Overwhelming Colorfast. The band formed in 1990 in Antioch, CA and was frequently compared to Hüsker Dü and Buzzcocks. Six months after its first performance, the band was signed to an offshoot of Sony Records and in the studio with celebrated producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Against Me!). Colorfast toured the US numerous times and shared stages with artists like Ramones and Social Distortion, as well as headlining club tours. Despite a valiant effort, commercial success eluded the band.

For this podcast, I interviewed band leader Bob Reed (gtr/vox), who tells the story of the group from its inception to its premature demise.

PLEASE NOTE: This podcast was originally published in 2008. That version was removed a while back. This is a re-post of that show without the music. Since that 2008 interview, Overwhelming Colorfast's first two albums have been added to itunes, thus making them available for the first time since their initial release in the early 90s. As of this posting, a label called Texas Jesus Records is planning to release a single of previously unreleased Colorfast music. Listen to the show here or look for it on itunes (preferred).

Nirvana's Infamous "Reading" Show Finally Available!!

Hard to believe it has been over 15 years since the death of Kurt Cobain. I remember the day vividly. I lived in Seattle at the time, and was planning on moving out of the state of Washington. There had been rumors floating for the previous week or two about Cobain, but they were just rumors. So, when the checkout girl at the grocery store asked if I'd heard about Cobain's death, I was quite dismissive, and laughed it off. I took my groceries home, turned on CNN, and there was Kurt's picture. It was true. He had died. I knew at that moment that my decision to leave Seattle was the right one. It was the end of an era.

Now, all of these years later, one of the most infamous Nirvana concerts of all time has been released on CD and DVD. Live at Reading documents Nirvana's headlining set at the 1992 Reading Festival in the UK. The show took place at the height of the Kurt + Courtney tabloid mania, and Cobain was quite angry at the media then. The rumors about Cobain's drug habit and the possible break up of Nirvana were swirling around then, too. I've seen snippets from this concert, but now the entire thing is available for purchase. I picked up the CD/DVD set, though they are also available separately.
